Game Sessions

All boys take part in a one hour games session during the week. Years 1 and 2 on Monday, Years 3 & 4 on Thursday, Year 5 & 6 on Monday/Tuesday and Years 7 & 8 on Tuesday/Wednesday. Boys wear full house uniform for games sessions (black shorts, house shirt, togs and if cold track suit top).

Year 5 to 8

All boys at King’s are encouraged to be involved in some form of sporting activity and we strive for the maximum participation from the greatest possible number of boys.

Sports Fixtures

The School has an extensive schedule of fixtures with local schools, with the majority of these matches taking place during the boys’ games sessions on Tuesday for Year 5 & 6 and on Wednesday for Year 7 & 8. The inter-school fixtures are listed in the calendar.

In addition, school teams take part in a number of traditional fixtures with other independent schools, both within Auckland and in other areas of the country.

Practices

Boys practise for their representative team on Monday 2.30 – 3.35pm (Middle School) and Tuesday 2.30 – 3.35pm (Senior School). Some practices may go longer or other practices may be added. Coaches will send notification of this to parents.

Sports Teams

Where possible, we endeavour to involve as many teams and boys as possible in our fixtures with local schools.

Boys from Years 5 to 8 may trial for selection in teams that take part in inter-school fixtures in:

Term 1 and 4
Cricket, Softball, Tennis, Swimming, Athletics, Touch Rugby

Term 2 and 3
Rugby, Soccer, Hockey, Cross Country, Flippa Ball, Water Polo, Basketball

Trials

Boys are selected on merit after trials and on the basis of our knowledge of a boy’s performance over a period of time, both at School and within the community. New boys are not disadvantaged and we make every effort to observe these boys in the sporting arena when they arrive here. Similarly, we continue to observe those boys who do not gain selection in school teams in the first instance and encourage them to improve in their chosen sport.

Boys may trial for a sports team for the first trial and then change to another sport for the second trial. After the second trial there is no changing!

We try to field as many teams as possible in each chosen sport. We can only cater for teams that have opposition to play.

Skill Based Programme

Boys that miss out on representative team selection will get to choose from the following sporting options:

  • Squash
  • Table Tennis
  • Orienteering
  • Badminton
  • Basketball
  • Rock Climbing

Boys that do not make a representative team will also be given the opportunity to choose from the above options.

House Games

All boys get to participate in House sport. In Terms 1 and 4, boys participate in competitions for softball, courtball and cricket. In Term 3, boys participate in rugby, soccer and hockey. All boys choose one sport to play for the summer and winter.
