King’s School has a large and enthusiastic Cub and Scout Group established in February 1955 exclusively for boys attending King's Prep. We are fortunate to be one of the larger groups with close to 90 boys enrolled.
Cubs and Scouts offer boys the opportunity to try new experiences and test themselves mentally and physically, in a safe and supervised environment.
Scouting offers an added dimension to school life at King’s and contributes towards the school’s mission to develop the talents of the whole boy for life.
Cubs are aged 7 ½ to 10 ½ (Years 3-6). The Cub programme focuses on challenge and encourages boys to ‘have a go’.
The boys do a variety of things, including:
- Games
- Outdoor activities
- Crafts and experiments
- Practical Skills
- Community-focused activities
- Badges are awarded to cubs that complete many of these activities
Each year the boys go on a camp to give them the opportunity to experience the outdoors and learn essential bush craft skills.
While most nights are based at the Den (on the Number 3 Field at school), the programme usually includes at least one ‘off-site’ community-focused activity per term.
Scouts are open to boys in the senior school. The Scout curriculum encourages boys to explore – their talents, their limits and the world around them. The Scout’s meet each fortnight on a Tuesday.
Some activities the Scouts have recently been involved in include:
- DC3 flight over Auckland
- Rifle shooting
- Tramping in the Abel Tasman National park
- Completing the Tongariro Alpine crossing.
Scouts will usually be involved in 4 Camps / tramping expeditions per year.
